That is a good question isn't it? It's one thing to know about Him, or to understand intellectually that He lived on this Earth; It's something completely different to actually know Him personally.
But that's what He died for.
Yes, He died. He died for you and me. How? In what way? He died on a Cross. He took the wrath that was due us all on that lonely Cross. He paid for every single one of your sins - even the ones you haven't committed yet. Why? Why did He do it? Because He loved us, and wanted a relationship with us, which He coudn't have until we could be forgiven (John 3:16).
You see, we are all sinners (Romans 3:23) But you knew that. What you may not have known is how high the standard is to get into Heaven apart from Christ: It's perfection. That's why we're all guilty, and that's why none of us are "good". Compared to others, we may be, but compared to God - who is perfectly righteous and holy - we woefully fall short (Romans 6:23).
The Good News is that Jesus died on the Cross for you, and took the punishment you deserved (Romans 5:8). So if you trust in that Sacrifice alone, instead of your own good works, you can receive the Gift - yes, I said Gift - of eternal life (Ephesians 2:8-9).
How do you receive that Gift? First, you repent (which means to change your mind about your sin). Repenting prepares you to receive the Gift (Mark 1:15). Then, express to God that you are now trusting in Jesus' Death, Burial, and Resurrection to pay your way to Heaven, not your works. When you have sincerely expressed those things to Him in prayer, you can know He has answered that prayer and given you eternal life (Romans 10:9-10).
